Tex-Mex garden

the brief

To liven up the tired garden, providing an exciting, warm, low-maintenance space for eating out, relaxing and entertaining with a nod towards the Californian heritage of the client.

the challenge

A small site with limited access, dilapidated fences and decking, tall tree cover and two levels.

the design solution

The existing lower terrace has been warmed up with bold rendered orange walls and a new set of central steps leads to the upper garden area with planters to either side. A new upper paved terrace is added to match the existing sandstone below. A large pergola sits centrally over the paving, festooned with colourful, scented plants and atmospheric lighting. The grass has been removed and the garden is softened by gravel planting and a lush planting border at the rear.
