Small cottage garden
A traditional English garden with abundant planting to make the space feel larger and the boundaries recede. A space for gardening enjoyment, relaxing, dining and sunbathing.
A small site on a new-build development set in beautiful surrounding landscape but enclosed within orange wood fence boundaries, and beset with severe drainage issues and sudden dips in lawn levels due to poor building waste removal practices.
the design solution
The existing paving is reworked into a new L-shape to add interest and extend the seating area into the sun, since the house faces north. The garden is split into three levels using timber sleeper retaining walls with a pathway leading around a series of borders and a small lawn for sunbathing. The space is divided further by a number of low evergreen hedges, making the garden feel larger. Height and interest are created with painted timber obelisks, smothered in scented climbers and the orange wood fences are painted in a neutral cream to act as a backdrop for the planting.
